KLEE Negative Marking: Should You Guess?

Updated 2 November 2026 by the faculty of Mentors Law Entrance Coaching Centre, Ernakulam. Rules can change every year – confirm in the KLEE 2027 prospectus at cee.kerala.gov.in.

KLEE has 120 questions, +3 for every correct answer and −1 for every wrong answer (maximum 360). Unattempted questions get 0. So the real question in the exam hall is: when should I answer a question I am not sure about?

The maths of guessing

Each question has 4 options. The table shows the average marks you gain per guess, depending on how many wrong options you can rule out.

Options you can eliminateChance of being rightAverage marks per guessVerdict
None (pure guess)1 in 4(¼ × 3) − (¾ × 1) = 0No gain – skip
One1 in 3(⅓ × 3) − (⅔ × 1) = +0.33Worth answering
Two1 in 2(½ × 3) − (½ × 1) = +1Definitely answer

The rule: a blind guess gains nothing on average, but if you can confidently rule out even one option, answering is worth it.

Accuracy beats attempts

StudentAttemptedCorrectWrongScore
A1107535225 − 35 = 190
B957817234 − 17 = 217

Student B attempted 15 fewer questions but scored 27 more marks. Every wrong answer costs you one mark and the time you spent on it.

A section-wise approach that works in KLEE

  • Vocabulary questions (spelling, synonyms, antonyms): either you know the word or you don't. Answer when sure, skip pure guesses.
  • Legal Aptitude principle–fact questions: apply the given principle strictly – you can usually eliminate two options, so attempt them.
  • Arithmetic: approximate and check options; plugging options back into the question often removes wrong choices.
  • Two rounds: in round one answer everything you are sure of; in round two return to questions where you could eliminate at least one option.

The best way to find your own accuracy level is to take full-length tests under exam conditions – try the free KLEE mock tests or the actual KLEE 2026 paper as a timed test. The result page shows your correct, wrong and skipped answers section by section.
