CUSAT CAT Law vs KLEE: How to Prepare for Both

Most Kerala law aspirants write both CUSAT CAT (for the School of Legal Studies, CUSAT) and KLEE (for the Government Law Colleges). Both use +3/−1 marking, but the papers reward different skills.

What this means
- Reasoning decides CUSAT. A third of the CUSAT paper is reasoning – series, coding-decoding, blood relations, directions, syllogisms, seating and statement–conclusion questions. In KLEE this is only a small part of 15 questions.
- Legal aptitude decides KLEE. 42 questions on legal terms, the Constitution, principle–fact problems and legal GK – and it is also KLEE's first tie-breaker.
- English is big in both. Vocabulary, grammar, error spotting and comprehension carry about a third of each paper, so English practice is never wasted.
- CUSAT is faster. 150 questions in 120 minutes leaves under 50 seconds per question, so speed drills matter more.
A combined plan (December to June)

Both exams use +3/−1 marking, so the same guessing rule applies: answer when you can eliminate at least one option (why).
Frequently asked questions
Is CUSAT CAT law harder than KLEE?
It is faster and needs more reasoning: 150 questions in 2 hours with 50 reasoning questions, compared with KLEE's 120 questions and 15 arithmetic/mental ability questions. KLEE puts more weight on legal aptitude (42 questions).
Can I prepare for CUSAT CAT and KLEE together?
Yes. English, GK and legal knowledge overlap. Add reasoning practice for CUSAT from March, then shift to KLEE's legal aptitude and Kerala GK after the CUSAT exam in May.
Does CUSAT CAT have negative marking?
Yes. +3 for a correct answer and −1 for a wrong answer, the same as KLEE.
