Is There an Age Limit for LLB in Kerala?
Updated 2 November 2026 by the faculty of Mentors Law Entrance Coaching Centre, Ernakulam. Rules can change every year – confirm in the KLEE 2027 prospectus at cee.kerala.gov.in.
Short answer: for the KLEE 5-year LLB you must be at least 17 years old as on 31 December of the admission year. The 2026 rules set no age limit for the 3-year LLB, and the upper age limit for the 5-year course was left "subject to the final decision of the Supreme Court". In practice, older students – including working professionals and homemakers – take KLEE every year.
KLEE age rules (2026)
| Course | Minimum age | Upper age limit |
|---|---|---|
| 5-year integrated LLB | 17 years as on 31 December of the admission year | Subject to the Supreme Court's final decision |
| 3-year LLB | No minimum | None in the 2026 rules |
Why is the upper age limit "subject to the Supreme Court"?
- In 2016 the Bar Council of India (BCI) revived an upper age limit for law admissions. In early 2017 it raised the limits, as an interim measure, to 22 years for the 5-year LLB and 45 years for the 3-year LLB.
- On 3 March 2017 the Supreme Court stayed the BCI notification, and in 2019 asked the BCI to reconsider the age limit after hearing stakeholders.
- On 25 September 2026, hearing the case again, the Supreme Court asked the BCI to clarify whether it is willing to withdraw the upper age limit for 5-year courses. The BCI defended it on the ground that most 5-year courses are residential.
Because the BCI rule remains stayed, admission authorities such as CEE Kerala have not applied an upper age limit, and their prospectus states that it depends on the Supreme Court's final decision.
What should older aspirants do?
- If you are a graduate, the 3-year LLB has no age limit – read 5-year vs 3-year LLB.
- If you only have Plus Two, you can apply for the 5-year LLB under the current rules – but keep an eye on the Supreme Court decision and the KLEE 2027 prospectus.
- Age is also the last tie-breaker in KLEE: when marks are equal, the older candidate is ranked higher (tie-breaking rule).
